切尔西 和 the Chocolate Factory (or rather, 好时 和 his 第六大道 chewing gum plant)

好时’s employees cut 和 pack chewing gum at 第六大道 和 21st Street.

在1920年代初期的五年光辉岁月中, 好时’s Chocolate operated a 糖果 plant at 第六大道, in the neighborhood of 切尔西. While chocolate bars 和 chocolate coating for other candies were produced 这里, the 切尔西 plant primarily focused on a new confection, one that ultimately failed — 好时’s Chewing Gum.

(That building is home today to Bed, Bath 和 Beyond.)  Siegel-Cooper was a sparkling Beaux-Arts treasure, 750,000 square feet with dozens of departments for shoppers, 和 its ambition 和 size drew headlines 和 the curiosity of New Yorkers.

仅仅几年之后,比较成功的百货商店(包括  主& Taylor and B Altman) fled to Herald Square 和 Fifth Avenue.  Hugh O’Neill’s, the department store one block south, bought 亚当斯干货 和 prepared to merge the businesses, even planning an underground tunnel under West 21st Street to link to two large structures.  This never came to fruition, 和 both O’Neill’s 和 亚当斯干货 went out of business for good.

糖果人 米尔顿·S·赫什y在他的家乡宾夕法尼亚州的德里教堂(Derry Church)上成功地制造了零食(现在是大亨’s name — 好时) 和 was looking for a another hit after the success of the 好时’s Kiss.

New York he bought some gum-making equipment 和 had it shipped to his Pennsylvania plant where production began on 好时’s Chewing Gum. “六根镍棒” went the slogan.

1918年1月, 好时 leased Adams’ former department store on 第六大道 和 eventually moved elements of his 糖果 production there, including his entire chewing gum business.

Early in his career, 好时 operated a 糖果 shop on 第六大道 和 42nd Street, 和 his wife had been a clerk at B Altman’向下几个街区。

Soon the 第六大道 shop was whirring with the sound of boilers, mixers, 糖果 presses 和 wrapping machines, sending out five thousand boxes of chewing gum a day, 和 a lesser amount of other 糖果 items.  Wheat was carried in from the Pennsylvania plant 和 added to the gum to make it more chewy.

With raw ingredients being hard to obtain in the early 1920s, the product was discontinued, 和 好时 eventually closed the plant in 1924.
